It was pretty mediocre. I liked the beginning a lot with the sweet stuff between Boog and the lady, but after he got lost in the woods the film kind of lost itself. I hated the ending too. It just felt so half-assed. The relationship you care the most about in this film is Boog and the lady and they just completely forget about that after he's in the woods. I just don't believe he's choose all those annoying jerk-face animals over that sweet lady!!
I thought the animation was really cool though! And I LOVED the designs. Especially the bear and the big Putty-voiced deer.
So out of what I've seen this year, this is how I rate them:
CARS
(huge quality gap)
MONSTER HOUSE OPEN SEASON OVER THE HEDGE HOODWINKED THE WILD
I still haven't seen these gems:
DOOGAL EVERYONE'S HERO BARNYARD ANT BULLY SCANNER DARKLY
Anything else I'm missing?

I liked it, myself.
Design: Excellent. I liked the contrast between Boog and Elliot, Elliot and Ian, Ian and Giselle, etc. The part where Ian gets up in Elliot's face and the two skulls "merge" is funny as well as intimidating.
Animation: Once again, excellent. Some scenes looked good enough to be drawn.
Characters: Loved 'em.
Gags: Beautiful. The part where Elliot poops in front of Boog was hilarious and unexpected. Could've used more real violence.
Story: This, I felt, was actually the weakest part of the film. A little too predictable for my taste. Started out okay, ended up feeling like I just watched Shrek 3. I was hoping it would've been fresher.
Ironically, it turned out just like I thought it would. I'll probably buy the merchandise soon.

New rule seconded! And how.
But yeah, i more or less agree with jen's assessment. Lovely to look at, not much else to feel one way or the other about otherwise.
there was one line that made me laugh out loud: "These big rocks are called mountains and these little rocks are their babies."

Man I laughed at the poop joke!! I felt dirty!!
I was also laughing at that porcupine thing that kept creepily saying, "Buuuuuddy..." in the background for no reason.

I think it was about as good as Over the Hedge. It had some really cute and sincere moments in the beginning that I really liked. Pretty much everything with the bear and the lady. I wish the film over all was more like those scenes. It was just jumping back and forth between wanting to be sweet and sincere and wanting to be bouncing all over the place with funny gags. I felt like it didn't really know what kind of film it wanted to be. But it's not bad at all. Not worthy of the wall of shame. But not worthy of the wall of glory either! But I agree with Jen about the ending. The more developed part of the story was the bear and the lady. They didn't really develop his relationship with the forest animals at all. So it felt really fake when he chooses to stay with them and call them family.

New message board rule: NEVER PRAISE THE POOP JOKE. I guess what I meant was it was an interesting gag, different from anything I've seen in animated movies before (or at least lately).

I just saw it tonight and I came home and told Liz about the poop joke. My only laugh in the movie. Over the Hedge made me laugh more, but not much more. I really didn't like it. Even the designs couldn't save it. The animation was hit and miss. Some scenes had bad lip sync and were over acted. I hated the lady and her design and her animation. Did you see those feet. But whatever, I probably couldn't pull it off better, so... I brought Bert and my eight year old brother. Bert hated it. Tommy loved it. He liked it more than Cars! He said it was funnier and had more jokes! Bert and I were dumbfounded, and kept proding him about other animated movies. He likes the new CG movies better than the old 2d ones. He thought Ice Age was better than all of em, including Incredibles! I said, "but the Incredibles is awesome! Dash is so funny!" He says, "Mmmmm, like which part?" "When he steals the outfits and when he says, 'That was the best vacation ever!" His sarcastic reply, "Ha. Ha. Ha." It's a sad reality folks, but kids love it all.

My little cousin thought Madagascar was better than Curse of the Wererabbit. He said Madagascar was funnier and "couldn't see the point" in Curse of the Wererabbit. It's true. Kids really don't distinguish and base humor appeals to them in a big way. I remember the days of my youth when fart jokes were golden. It's left to us, as film makers, to responsibly nurture their tiny minds.

You have to mold their brains when they are very young. Then you can turn them into good little film snobs...like my baby brother.^_^
