Hey..Hi It's that Q dude again posting Wicked art. Yeah here's some stuff I've been drawing around in my spare time...some Wicked stuff. very random stuff I've scanned from my SB. Chistery!!!!!! This is a situation in the book, where Galinda first meets Elphaba, as they are forced to room together by Madame Morrible. "What is this Feeling" Man what an awesome song. I tried to draw the part where Galinda goes "These things are sent to try us". Such cool and clever lyrics! This is a drawing I did of the Wizard. Yeah..I know it doesn't look anything like the musical Wizard. He's the 'book-version' Wizard. Man, the Wizard in the book is such a Crazy psycho-biotch! it's crazy cool! He's a complete maniac... I dig those cool crazy psycho maniac type villians more than those mediocre wishy-washy "kind of nice, kind of bad" type villians. hehe This is Elphaba after she becomes the WWW. I actually did this one some time ago..so I want to do it again...but am too lazy too...ah.. Glinda and Elphaba confront the Terrible OZ! another Book moment.. [http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y261/planetq/drdill01.jpg/img] DR.DILL!!! yeah...I drew him with humanistic touches...and this is the reason why: you know how goats really do have the coolest looking eyes, and came up with an idea for using them when he's singing "Something bad". Unlike the book version, were Animals are just discriminated upon, the musical version's concept appeals to me more, where Animals actually loose the abbility to think and speak, thuse turning into animals. And so here's my idea of the part where Dr.Dill is all like "Baaaaaaaahd" The more he becomes from 'Animal'to 'animal' his looks turn into an 'animal'. so I made his eyes into real animal goat eyes when he's actually showing glimpses for turning into a real goat! Just an idea that slipped through my head...I jogged it down. And last but not least! Baby Elphaba!!!!

That's weird. My dr.dill drawings didn't show. I posted them up and all I got is : "The more he becomes from 'Animal'to 'animal' his looks turn into an 'animal'. so I made his eyes into real animal goat eyes when he's actually showing glimpses for turning into a real goat! Just an idea that slipped through my head...I jogged it down." Yeah..those who read this must think "what the heck is he talking about?" actually I wrote and posted some Dr.Dill stuff and it didn't show and only that text showed.. strange..are there limits posting images? anyway, this is what i originally posted: DR.DILL!!! yeah...I drew him with humanistic touches...and this is the reason why: you know how goats really do have the coolest looking eyes, and came up with an idea for using them when he's singing "Something bad". Unlike the book version, were Animals are just discriminated upon, the musical version's concept appeals to me more, where Animals actually loose the abbility to think and speak, thuse turning into animals. And so here's my idea of the part where Dr.Dill is all like "Baaaaaaaahd" i7.photobucket.com/albums/y261/planetq/drdill02.jpgThe more he becomes from 'Animal'to 'animal' his looks turn into an 'animal'. so I made his eyes into real animal goat eyes when he's actually showing glimpses for turning into a real goat! Just an idea that slipped through my head...I jogged it down. P.S: I modified that last drawing of Dr.Dill into a URL link, because the image was to wide, and screw up the page..sorry for the inconvenience! -Q

...Guh? Q man, those designs are mind-bogglingly awesome. MIND-BOGGLINGLY. You don't have to appreciate Wicked to appreciate how appealing and expressive these are. My personal favorites are the wizard, and the one where Galinda is looking all grossed out.
Solid work, man! SOLID.

Alex- Thanks man!! Glad you like 'em! Yeah, I tried to get some aspects of Hitler and stuff in his facial features and looks, because I think there are some parts in the book where Gregory Maguire depicts the Wizard and his doings to Nazi Germany.
Ed- Good! ..that's a good thing right? I never got tired of Wicked...atleast not yet. I really want to see the Chicago production, and I might see it during Thanksgiving break or something. It got amazingly good reviews! and the tickets are way cheaper than Broadway. The cast is supposed to be all these super energetic young people.
I just remembered something that I was gonna ask you guys but kept forgetting. You know that Calarts Meal Plan sheet that are sent out to you? There's Plan A and Plan B. Which one should a character animator take? or just in general, which one is better? and what is a 'flex'?
For those who are kind enough to answer that question: Thanks! -Q

i can easily say that im not the biggest Wicked fan but these drawings ARE AWESOME!!! The flying monkey and WWW Elphaba are my favorite. The baby is also freakishly cool! For the calarts meal plan, i forgot what it said but just take the deal where you pre-pay around $500 into your account. The meals at school half the time are as revolting as high school. They're also expensive as hell, so if you can cook, good for you! The best idea is to cook for yourself and the dorms have pantries with stoves and ovens. If you can cook that is...i can't... i feel so incompetent

Thanks daaveed! Well, I checked the meal plan argreement sheet again, and it said "MANDATORY FOR ALL FIRST YEAR BFA ON CAMPUS RESIDENTS". So maybe it's different with the returning students form? anyway it says:
PLAN A: 14 meals/week + $50 flex cost: $ 1,150/semester
PLAN B: 12 meals/week + $100flex Cost: $1,150/semester
I guess I'll be signing up for Plan B since it means less meals and more flex(whatever that is.) Geez are the meals that bad? and I can't cook! oh well, are there alot of restaurants around calarts? I know theres a walmart in walking distance.. -Q

There aren't many resturants around calarts, and walmart is a little far for walking distance. I would look into vons (food shopping center), that's the closest food center to calarts. You will learn the skill of mooching soon enough.

The food in the Cafeteria is ASS. If you can get out of paying that atrocious amount of money for the crappy food.... DO IT. Try just not paying for it. See if they say anything to you.
Crap, I completely forgot to say, Q, these drawings are flippin' AWESOME!!! I love the one with Elphaba and her broom. Super sweet.

Geez. They make it sound so good in the pamphlet I got: "The Cafe' at Calarts, a gathering place for the entire community is designed to showcase a wide range of flavorful, delicious offering for breakfast, lunch and dinner in a casual dining setting." " All of our stations feature imaginative and nutritious vegetarian and vegan entrees." Yeah atleast I won't have to worry about giving up meat for lent or something!
Ed- good thing they have vons! Jen-Thanks! I think that one's the favorite for most people! heh heh. I tried to skeak in some facial features of Margaret Hamilton(like the pointy nose and chin and the dark strong eyebrows) because her looks have kind of become a trademark for witches(and especially the WWW), but I also tried to make her look like she's the 'good guy' not the 'evil' witch. Lissa- Yeah, Chistery is an awsome character. Actually I thought of a different story for the first encounter of Elphaba and Chistery. And that was going to be a picture of it..but bah curse lazyness.
By the way, how did you guys like the musical ending?! You guys didn't already know about it right?! I hope you didn't 'cause I left our any spoilers concidering the musical story when I was posting comparisons between the book and musical.
I think the musical ending is soooo much better! It's totally a disney-typed ending(remember the little mermaid and Hunchback of Notredame) but it's so much cooler! And it just doesn't makes sense that Elphaba after all those years never really touched big amounts of water. Didn't she ever sweat hard under the burning sun in prime summertime?!! What do you guys think -Q

I agree with you Q, the musical ending is more satisfying than the book. The book sort of just ended with elphaba melted... i guess the reader assumed that she is dead 'cause of the movie. Though the twist to the musical ending seems a little bit ... surprised and out of the blue, then again, in the musical she never seems to be afraid of water. Remember that sequence in the "i'm not that girl"? She was singing in the rain. In the "For Good" song Elphaba brought out the bucket of water on stage without any explanation. It seems like she has planned the scheme under our nose.
BTW Q, don't get the meal plan. It is not worth it. You can go to the cafe and pay for food without the meal plan. Anyone can go there and eat, but who will? It is greasy, unhealthy, smelly, and worst of all, pricy for that terdy food. Maybe the cafe is better in the coming year, but I fully doubted. I got diarreah everytime I eat the quesadilla and chicken taco. Ack! Their chicken is way pass expiration date. If anyone plan to die of food poisoning, the cafeteria is the place to be.

I have mixed feelings about the musical ending. SPOILERS!!!!!
Having her die in the book(for reals) felt really appropriate. You've heard the Wizard of Oz telling of the story so many times, and you always want the horrible witch to die. "Wicked" is supposed to be the "real" version of what happened. We find out the Witch is the hero and not the villain, then to have her die at the end, to watch the same events we've always seen in a new light, its such a tragedy!!! Slapping this, "oh she didn't die! It was all ruse," thing, just to give it a happy ending, seemed kind of cheap in a way.
BUT... on the other hand.... (after much discussion with Adrian), it doesn't really fit the tone of the musical to have her die at the end. They've sent up this really comedic, light story, and to kill of the main character at the end of that seems like the wrong thing to do. And, hey! I love the main character and liked that she got fiyero and lived to see another day at the end. That was pretty sweet. Also the image of both her and fiyero's pointed hats fading into the background was really really cool!
So yeah, mixed feelings. I'd take either ending though, honestly. (Deep down, I probably like the happy ending more, because it makes me feel the emotion: "happy" )

Ed- It says the meal plan is MANDATORY FOR ALL FIRST YEAR BFA ON CAMPUS RESIDENTS! haha. If I don't sign up, it says I will be automatically enrolled in Plan A(which is more meals and less flex...what is flex?!!) so I guess I'll just sign up for Plan B. Yeah, actually, the bucket of water was supposed to indicate Elphaba's suicide(or fake suicide) plan. Since she was already named as a wicked person, no matter how much good she did, she would never get the approval. She would never change the world. She was hopeless! So she decided to kill herself to show to all the people in Oz that "No one mourns the Wicked", thus giving a lesson to the people that Wickedness will always diminish and Goodness will always win. And it also gave some hints and glimpses throughout that Elphaba melting in water is just ridiculous. "I hear her soul is so unclean, pure water will melt her!" "what?!" "melt her? Please! somebody go and melt her!!" "Did you hear that? water will melt hear?! people are so empty headed they'll believe anything!"
Jen- yeah, the musical tone is pretty important I guess. In Wicked, the big number is Defying Gravity, and if she did end up dying in the end, then what would the point be ? hehe "She defyed gravity, she took her own path, she stood up against the immoralities and to help others, then died a miserable death....the end" that would be just depressing!
you know...the audience knows already that she's going to die. And when it gears toward the end, they are gonna feel pretty sad about it, knowing that anymoment that Dorothy will come in and dump a bucket of water on her. I think they are going to feel that "tragedy" allready. But to give them a new happiness I guess is a pretty good choice I think. They feel good leaving the theater! I think the happy-ending has to do some part with all the money wicked is making. They wanna go watch it again! hehe But it was presented in a rather cheapish "TA-DAH!" way you were talking about. They could have changed it and make it more less 'ta-dah'-ish but still happy I think. But concidering all those teenage girls who make up the most of the audience, I'm pretty sure none of them are going to think(being the teenage girls they are) 'ooh..man that was kinda cheap!' They're probably just gonna think "YAY!!!!". oh well...give the audience what they want I guess. -Q

I'm so sorry Q, that mandatory meal plan deal is BULL. BULLCRAP is what you will have to put up with. Just remember, Calarts is super flexible... and liberal, you can get away with many things. live and learn.
